How to renovate a kitchen on a budget in New Zealand
The cheapest kitchen renovation keeps the layout, the plumbing and the wiring where they are, and replaces what you see and touch: doors, benchtop, splashback and handles. CheckMyBuilder puts a budget job at about $15,000–25,000 (July 2026). Moving plumbing, removing a wall or upgrading to stone are what push a job into the next band.

Key takeaways
- Budget band: about $15,000–25,000 for new doors, benchtop and splashback, or an entry-level flat-pack replacement (CheckMyBuilder, July 2026).
- Keeping the sink, cooktop and dishwasher where they are is the single biggest saving. Moving plumbing or gas adds about $3,000–8,000.
- Laminate benchtops are $383–613 per m² + GST, against $613–1,533 for engineered stone (Superior Renovations, 2026).
- Removing a structural wall adds about $5,000–15,000 and is restricted building work.
- If the carcasses are sound, new doors and a new benchtop on the old cabinets can transform a kitchen for a fraction of a replacement.
How much does a cheap kitchen renovation cost in NZ?
About $15,000–25,000 for a budget job, on CheckMyBuilder's July 2026 figures. That buys a kitchen in the same footprint with most services left in place: new doors, benchtop and splashback on existing cabinets, or an entry-level flat-pack replacement. CheckMyBuilder does not state whether its figures include GST.
| Tier | Typical range | What it usually means |
|---|---|---|
| Budget | $15,000–25,000 | Same footprint, most services kept. New doors, benchtop and splashback, or entry-level flat-pack. |
| Mid-range | $25,000–45,000 | New cabinetry throughout, stone or quality laminate, new appliances, services renewed in place. |
| Premium | $45,000–90,000 | Layout changes, bespoke joinery, premium appliances and finishes. |
What pushes a small kitchen budget over?
Four decisions, mostly: moving the plumbing or gas, taking out a wall, upgrading to stone, and buying new appliances. Each has a published price range, and any one of them can move a budget job into the mid-range band on its own.
The cheapest kitchen is the one where the sink stays under the window it is already under. Drainage falls, water supply and the dishwasher connection all follow the sink, so leaving it put saves the plumber's biggest job.
| Decision | Adds about |
|---|---|
| Move the plumbing or gas | $3,000–8,000 |
| Stone instead of laminate | $2,000–6,000 |
| Remove a structural wall | $5,000–15,000 |
| New appliances | $3,000–20,000 |
Should I replace the doors or the whole kitchen?
Replace the doors and benchtop if the cabinet boxes are sound, dry and square, and the layout works. Replace the whole kitchen if the carcasses are swollen from water, the layout fights you every day, or you are changing the room anyway. A door-and-benchtop refresh keeps most of the cost of the job out of the skip.
- Check under the sink first. Swollen particleboard around the sink and dishwasher is the most common reason a refresh becomes a replacement.
- Check the hinges and drawer runners. Old hinges can be swapped for modern soft-close ones on most cabinets; new doors on worn runners still feel old.
- Measure the doors. Replacement doors are made to size, so non-standard cabinets are not a problem for a joiner, but they are for an off-the-shelf door range.
Where does a small budget go furthest?
On the things you touch and see every day: the benchtop, the doors and handles, the splashback and the lighting. A good laminate benchtop, new doors and under-cabinet lighting change how a kitchen looks far more than a new oven does.
Laminate has improved a lot. At $383–613 per m² + GST against $613–1,533 for engineered stone (Superior Renovations, 2026), it is the obvious place to save on a budget job, and it can be upgraded later without touching the cabinets. See what a benchtop costs.
Keep the appliances if they work. They are a line you can upgrade one at a time over the next few years, and they cost the same whether you buy them now or later.
Is flat-pack the cheapest option?
For a full replacement in a square room with standard dimensions, usually yes. In an older house where nothing is square, filler panels and compromises can cost you storage, and a door refresh on existing cabinets may be cheaper still.
Our flat-pack vs custom guide sets out when each one is the right answer.
What can I do myself to save money?
Demolition of non-structural cabinetry, painting, and some of the tidy-up can be done yourself. The plumbing and the fixed wiring cannot: sanitary plumbing must be done by an authorised plumber and electrical work by a registered electrician, who provide the paperwork for it.
If the house was built before 2000, get anything you are going to remove or cut tested for asbestos before you start, particularly old vinyl flooring and wall linings. See who has to be licensed for the trade rules.
Questions
What is the cheapest way to redo a kitchen in NZ?
Keep the layout and services, and replace the doors, benchtop, splashback and handles on sound existing cabinets. That sits in the budget band of about $15,000–25,000 (CheckMyBuilder, July 2026), and a simple refresh can come in under it.
How much does a small kitchen renovation cost in NZ?
A small kitchen in the same footprint usually sits in the budget to low mid-range band, about $15,000–25,000 or a little over (CheckMyBuilder, July 2026). Moving plumbing or adding stone are the usual reasons it costs more.
Can I just replace kitchen cupboard doors?
Yes, if the cabinet boxes are sound and dry. A joiner can make doors to fit existing cabinets, and new hinges and handles at the same time make the most difference.
Is it worth getting a kitchen designer for a budget job?
For a straight refresh with no layout change, often not. For a full replacement, a plan stops expensive mistakes. See what kitchen designers charge in New Zealand before you decide.
