Whether your job needs a building consent depends on what changes, not on the budget. Auckland Council publishes a plain-language page on kitchen and bathroom renovations, and the national starting point is the government's Can I Build It? tool. Auckland housing stock, and what it does to a kitchen
The city's villas and bungalows are rarely square, which is where standard flat-pack modules leave filler panels and custom joinery starts to earn its cost. Post-1990 townhouses tend to be tight footprints on a slab, where moving a waste into an island is the expensive decision. Neither is a rule, and both are worth drawing before pricing.
- Refresh: New doors, drawer fronts, handles, benchtop and splashback on the cabinet carcasses you already have.
- Replace: New cabinetry throughout, new benchtop and splashback, new appliances, services renewed where they already are.
- Remodel: A new layout: services moved, an island added, sometimes a wall opened up. Consent and licensed structural work.
