Kitchen renovations in Auckland

A typical Auckland kitchen renovation costs about $40,000, against a national typical of $35,000 (CheckMyBuilder, July 2026), or roughly $2,300 per square metre. That is about 14% above the New Zealand figure, and the reason is labour and trade availability rather than materials.

Consent in Auckland

Whether your job needs a building consent depends on what changes, not on the budget. Auckland Council publishes a plain-language page on kitchen and bathroom renovations, and the national starting point is the government's Can I Build It? tool. Auckland Council's fixed fee for a minor plumbing consent is $354, and a full kitchen consent in Auckland has been quoted at $2,500–6,500 (Superior Renovations, 2026).

We do that check as part of the consult and write the answer into your written scope. The consent guide.

Auckland housing stock, and what it does to a kitchen

The city's villas and bungalows are rarely square, which is where standard flat-pack modules leave filler panels and custom joinery starts to earn its cost. Post-1990 townhouses tend to be tight footprints on a slab, where moving a waste into an island is the expensive decision. Neither is a rule, and both are worth drawing before pricing.

  • Refresh: New doors, drawer fronts, handles, benchtop and splashback on the cabinet carcasses you already have.
  • Replace: New cabinetry throughout, new benchtop and splashback, new appliances, services renewed where they already are.
  • Remodel: A new layout: services moved, an island added, sometimes a wall opened up. Consent and licensed structural work.

Other regions

Wellington $37,000, Christchurch $34,000, the rest of New Zealand $32,000 for a typical job (CheckMyBuilder, July 2026). We will open those areas only when there is a contracted workshop and licensed trades in them.
