Kitchen renovations on the North Shore

A North Shore kitchen costs what an Auckland kitchen costs: a typical job is about $40,000, or roughly $2,300 per square metre (CheckMyBuilder, July 2026). What changes from street to street on the Shore is the house, and the house decides where the money goes.

How much does a kitchen renovation cost on the North Shore?

Nobody publishes a North Shore-only cost series, so the honest figures are Auckland's. By specification they run $15,000–$25,000 basic, $26,000–$35,000 mid-range and $90,000–$138,000 luxury, excluding GST (Superior Renovations, 2026).

Auckland, by specification (Superior Renovations, 2026, + GST)
LevelRange
Basic$15,000–$25,000
Mid-range$26,000–$35,000
Luxury$90,000–$138,000

Where a North Shore job lands in those bands depends far more on what is behind the walls than on the postcode. Moving the sink or the cooktop, opening a wall, or bringing an old switchboard up to standard are the line items that push a mid-range kitchen towards the top of its band. Run your own numbers in the cost calculator or read the full kitchen renovation cost guide.

North Shore homes and what they do to a kitchen

The Shore packs several eras of housing into a short drive, and each one brings its own kitchen problems.

  • Villas and bungalows around Devonport, Northcote Point and the older parts of Takapuna. High studs, walls that are rarely square, and kitchens that were often added on at the back. Flat-pack modules leave filler panels here, which is where made-to-measure joinery earns its cost.
  • Brick-and-tile and weatherboard houses from the 1960s and 70s through Glenfield, Birkenhead, Beach Haven and Forrest Hill. Usually a closed-off kitchen next to the dining room, and the most common North Shore brief is opening that wall. Whether the wall is load-bearing changes both the price and the consent question.
  • Townhouses and apartments in Albany, Takapuna and along the busway. Tight footprints, often on a slab, where moving a waste into a new island is the expensive decision, and where a body corporate may need to approve the work.

Most of the Shore's kitchens fall into one of three jobs: a refresh, replace or remodel. The layout pages, such as galley and island, cover what fits in each footprint.

Do I need a building consent on the North Shore?

The North Shore is part of Auckland Council, so the rules and fees are the city's. Like-for-like replacement usually needs no consent; moving plumbing or drainage, or removing a load-bearing wall, often does. Auckland Council's fixed fee for a minor plumbing consent is $354 (Superior Renovations, 2026).

Plumbing, gas and electrical work must be done by licensed trades whatever the consent answer. The consent guide and who needs to be licensed go through it.

Planning around the Shore

Practical things are worth settling before a quote. Parking for a trade van matters on narrow Devonport and Northcote streets, and on a townhouse site with one shared driveway. If your trades are coming from across the city, ask how they will plan around the Harbour Bridge, because a late start every morning stretches a three-week install. Homes close to the beaches see salt in the air, so it is worth asking about hinge and handle finishes. None of it is unusual; it simply belongs in the written scope rather than surfacing on day one.

Before you sign anything, read the contract guide and the payment schedule guide, so deposits and stage payments line up with the work.

North Shore questions

How much does a kitchen renovation cost on the North Shore?

There is no separate published figure for the North Shore, so use Auckland's: a typical Auckland kitchen is about $40,000, roughly $2,300 per square metre (CheckMyBuilder, July 2026). By specification, Auckland bands run $15,000–25,000 basic, $26,000–35,000 mid and $90,000–138,000+ luxury, excluding GST (Superior Renovations, 2026).

Is the North Shore a different council for consents?

No. The old North Shore City Council is now part of Auckland Council, so consents, fees and inspections for Takapuna, Albany, Devonport or Glenfield all go through Auckland Council, the same as the rest of the city.

Do you renovate kitchens on the North Shore?

The North Shore is part of our Auckland launch area. We are contracting a joinery workshop, a designer, an authorised plumber and a registered electrician now. Until they are signed we take enquiries and no payment, and once the workshop is signed we will publish exactly which suburbs it installs in.

How long does a North Shore kitchen renovation take?

The same as anywhere in Auckland: the install itself is usually a few weeks, but design, joinery manufacture and any consent add more time before anyone starts on site. Our timeline guide breaks it down stage by stage.
