Flat-pack or custom cabinetry: which is right for your kitchen
Flat-pack suits square rooms in standard sizes where price matters most; custom joinery earns its cost when the room is not standard, when you want cabinets sized to the millimetre, or when the finish has to match something. Both can be a sensible answer, and the room usually decides.

What you are actually choosing between
Not quality, mostly. Both flat-pack and custom kitchens are usually built from similar board with similar hardware. The real difference is whether the cabinets are made in standard modules or to your room's exact dimensions, and what that does to fit, storage and the process.

When flat-pack is genuinely the right call
In those cases the free in-home design that comes with it is a real service, and we would rather say so than pretend otherwise.
- The room is close to square and the runs suit standard module widths.
- It is a rental or a pre-sale refresh, and the budget is the brief.
- You want it done soon, and lead time matters more than a perfect fit.
- You are happy with the retailer's door range and finishes.
When custom pays for itself
- A villa or bungalow where nothing is square and standard modules leave 90 mm filler panels.
- Ceiling-height cabinetry, or a specific appliance that standard modules will not take.
- Awkward corners where the storage solution has to be designed rather than selected.
- A finish that has to match existing joinery elsewhere in the house.
The part that is the same either way
Whichever cabinets you buy, the sanitary plumbing must go to a PGDB-authorised plumber, the fixed wiring to a registered electrician who provides the certification, and any structural change to a Licensed Building Practitioner.
Retailer packages handle this by organising installers: Mitre 10, for instance, arranges installation with kitchen installers and gives you one point of contact and one invoice. Just make sure you know who the licensed trades are and that you get their paperwork. See who has to be licensed.

Is a flat-pack kitchen worth it?
In a square room on a tight budget, yes. In an old villa where nothing is plumb, the filler panels and compromises can cost you more storage than the saving is worth.
How much cheaper is flat-pack?
Enough to move a job between tiers: flat-pack replacements tend to sit in the $15,000–25,000 budget band while custom replacements sit in the $25,000–45,000 mid-range (CheckMyBuilder, July 2026). The gap widens as the room gets less standard.
Can you install a flat-pack kitchen I have already bought?
That is not what we do. We design and manage complete jobs with our partner joinery workshop. If flat-pack is the right answer for your room, we will say so at the consult and you will not have wasted the plan: it works for any supplier.
Do custom cabinets last longer?
Not automatically. Hardware quality and how well the kitchen was installed matter more than whether the boxes were made to order. Ask about the hinges and runners, and their warranty.
