How long a kitchen renovation takes in New Zealand
Allow about three to five months end to end for a typical New Zealand kitchen replacement, and three to eight weeks without a kitchen. Cabinetry manufacture alone takes 4–6 weeks before anyone comes on site (Superior Renovations, 2026), and the on-site stage runs 3–8 weeks (CheckMyBuilder, July 2026).

Key takeaways
- Cabinetry manufacture: about 4–6 weeks (Superior Renovations, 2026).
- On site: 3–8 weeks depending on scope (CheckMyBuilder, July 2026).
- Design and final measure add 1–3 weeks at the front.
- Consent, if you need it, sits on top of everything else.
- You lose the kitchen for the on-site stage, not the whole programme.
The stages, in order
A kitchen renovation is four stages, and only one of them happens in your house. Understanding that is the difference between a programme that feels endless and one that feels manageable.
| Stage | Typical duration | Where it happens |
|---|---|---|
| Design, final measure, signed scope | 1–3 weeks | Your kitchen, then a drawing board |
| Cabinetry manufacture | 4–6 weeks | The joinery workshop |
| On site: strip-out, services, install, benchtop, finishing | 3–8 weeks | Your house |
| Consent, if required | Added at the front | Your council |

Why the benchtop adds a gap
A stone benchtop is templated after the cabinets are installed, then fabricated, then fitted. That means a period with cabinets in place and no bench, usually measured in days rather than weeks, and it is normal rather than a sign of a problem.
Laminate can often be supplied to size with the cabinetry, which removes the gap. If being without a bench for a week matters more to you than the finish, that is a real trade-off to price at the design stage.
How to live through it
- Set up a temporary kitchen before strip-out: fridge, microwave, kettle, a table, and the dishes you actually use.
- Ask for the water and power isolation dates in advance. They are the days that hurt.
- Keep the fridge out of the work zone so it is not being moved every morning.
- Book the strip-out for the start of a week, not a Friday.
What makes a programme blow out
Three things, in order of frequency: changes made after manufacture starts, something unexpected behind the old cabinets, and appliances with long lead times ordered late.
The first is the one you control. Once cabinetry is in manufacture, a change means a new part, a new queue and a new date. That is the argument for spending the time on the drawing before the workshop starts cutting: see the design consult.
Questions
How long is a kitchen renovation from start to finish?
Typically three to five months for a same-footprint replacement: 1–3 weeks of design, 4–6 weeks of cabinetry manufacture (Superior Renovations, 2026), then 3–8 weeks on site (CheckMyBuilder, July 2026).
How long will I be without a kitchen?
Only for the on-site stage, so three to eight weeks depending on scope. A refresh can be one to two weeks; a remodel with structural work is longer.
Can it be done faster?
Manufacture is the constraint, and it is set by the workshop's queue. Ordering early, freezing the design, and having appliances on site before install day are the three things that genuinely save weeks.
Does consent add much time?
It can, and it sits at the front of the programme rather than alongside it. Ask the consent question before the cabinetry is ordered, not after.
