How much does it cost to install a dishwasher in NZ?
About $175–285 + GST to replace a dishwasher where the tap, waste and power point are already there, and about $285–600 or more + GST for a first install that needs new plumbing and power, on Ka Pai Plumbing's published estimates. Mitre 10's like-for-like installation in Auckland starts from $225. The dishwasher itself is extra.
Most of the price is labour, so the question that matters is what is already there. A swap is a plumber disconnecting the old machine, sliding the new one in, connecting the inlet hose and the drain, and testing for leaks. A first install adds a water point, a waste connection and often a power point, and each of those is time from a licensed trade.
| Job | Price | GST | Source |
|---|---|---|---|
| Basic replacement install (1–2 hours) | $175–285 | Excludes GST | Ka Pai Plumbing |
| New install, plumbing and power | $285–600+ | Excludes GST | Ka Pai Plumbing |
| Like-for-like replacement, Auckland | From $225 | Not stated | Mitre 10 via AA Home Services |
| Dishwasher, washing machine or fridge with a water connection | $150–400 | Not stated | Plumberz (Auckland, 2026) |
| Plumber's hourly rate, Auckland | $90–150 per hour | Excludes GST | Plumberz (Auckland, 2026) |
| Plumber's call-out fee, Auckland | $80–120 | Not stated | Plumberz (Auckland, 2026) |
Mitre 10's price is for direct like-for-like replacement of an existing appliance; extra labour, materials and taking away the old machine are charged on top and agreed on site. Prices outside Auckland can be lower.
What makes a dishwasher installation cost more?
Anything that is not already under the bench. No dishwasher tap on the water supply, no spare spigot on the sink waste, no power point in the next cupboard, a cabinet that has to be cut to make a 600 mm gap, or an integrated model with a door panel to hang all add time, and sometimes a second trade.
- No water point. A first install needs a tee and an isolating tap on the cold supply, which is a plumber's job.
- No waste connection. The drain hose needs a spigot on the sink waste or its own trap; older sinks often need a new waste fitted.
- No power point. A dishwasher needs a socket it can reach, usually in the cupboard next door. Adding one is fixed wiring for a registered electrician.
- Making the gap. Most built-under dishwashers need a 600 mm opening. Taking out a base cabinet, trimming the kickboard or cutting the benchtop support is cabinetry work on top.
- Integrated and drawer models. A fully integrated dishwasher carries a cabinet-door panel that has to be fitted and aligned. Ka Pai Plumbing notes that freestanding machines are the easiest to install.
- Moving the dishwasher. A new position away from the sink means running supply and waste pipes, which is part of the $3,000–8,000 CheckMyBuilder puts on moving plumbing (July 2026).
- Taking away the old one. Mitre 10 charges for removal and disposal as an optional extra.
Can I install a dishwasher myself in NZ?
Partly. The Plumbers, Gasfitters and Drainlayers Board says you can install appliances such as dishwashers and washing machines. You cannot fix or unfix any pipe they connect to, including the waste pipe, the trap or any pipe that supplies water. So connecting to a tap and spigot already there is yours; adding them is a plumber's.
In practice: if the old dishwasher came out of a space with its own tap, a spigot on the sink waste and a socket, plugging the new one into the same three is the kind of installation the Board describes. If any of the three is missing, the work to add it is restricted. The water point and waste go to a plumber authorised by the Board, and a new socket goes to a registered electrician.
Check the hose lengths before you buy. A dishwasher drain hose has a maximum length and height set in the maker's installation instructions, and a machine that only reaches with an extension is a common reason a simple swap turns into a plumber's visit.

Worked example: two dishwasher jobs, priced
Swapping a dead dishwasher for a new freestanding one into the same tap, waste and socket is about $175–285 + GST, or $201–328 including GST. A first install in a kitchen that never had one, with a new water point, waste and power, is $285–600+ + GST for the plumbing and power, plus cabinetry if a cupboard has to come out.
Inside a full kitchen renovation, the dishwasher connection is part of the plumber's normal visit to reconnect the sink, so it costs little extra if the dishwasher stays next to the sink. Our kitchen cost calculator shows where the appliances sit in a whole kitchen budget for your size and region.
| Job | Ex GST | Incl. GST |
|---|---|---|
| Like-for-like swap: existing tap, waste and socket | $175–285 | $201.25–327.75 |
| First install: new water point, waste and power | $285–600+ | $327.75–690+ |

Ka Pai's figures are ballpark estimates; the final price depends on the layout and the existing plumbing and electrical. Call-out fees and travel can be extra.
How long does it take to install a dishwasher?
One to two hours for a straightforward replacement, on Ka Pai Plumbing's estimate. A first install with a new water point, waste and power point takes longer, and if an electrician and a cabinetmaker are involved as well it is booked around all three trades.
Plan the order: cabinetry first to make the gap, then the electrician for the socket, then the plumber, who connects and tests the machine last. In a renovation that happens near the end, after the benchtop is down. See how long a kitchen renovation takes.
Questions
How much does it cost to install a dishwasher in NZ?
About $175–285 + GST for a like-for-like swap and $285–600+ + GST for a first install that needs plumbing and power (Ka Pai Plumbing). Mitre 10's Auckland like-for-like installation starts from $225.
Do you need a plumber to install a dishwasher in NZ?
Not always. The Plumbers, Gasfitters and Drainlayers Board says you can install a dishwasher yourself, but fixing or unfixing the water supply or waste pipes is restricted sanitary plumbing for an authorised plumber.
Do you need an electrician to install a dishwasher?
Only if there is no socket it can plug into. A new power point is fixed wiring for a registered electrician, who must give you the certification for it.
Does Mitre 10 install dishwashers?
Yes, through AA Home Services in Auckland, from $225 for a direct like-for-like replacement (checked 31 October 2026). Extra labour, materials and removal of the old machine are charged on top.
Is it cheaper to put the dishwasher next to the sink?
Yes. Next to the sink it shares the water supply and the sink waste. Anywhere else needs new pipes run to it, and moving plumbing is one of the biggest additions to a kitchen budget, at about $3,000–8,000 (CheckMyBuilder, July 2026).
