Small kitchen renovation cost in NZ, worked out by size
A small kitchen renovation in New Zealand costs about $1,533–3,000 per square metre + GST for budget to mid-range work (Superior Renovations, Auckland, 2026). For a 7 m² kitchen that is roughly $10,700–21,000 + GST. Keeping the sink, cooktop and dishwasher where they are is what holds a small job at the bottom of that range.

Key takeaways
- Per square metre: about $1,533–2,000 + GST for a basic specification and $2,000–3,000 for mid-range, in Auckland (Superior Renovations, 2026). CheckMyBuilder's Auckland average is about $2,300 per m² (July 2026).
- Worked out: a 5 m² kitchen is about $7,700–15,000 + GST, 7 m² about $10,700–21,000 and 9 m² about $13,800–27,000.
- Small kitchens cost more per m² than big ones, because the plumber, the electrician, the benchtop template and the appliances cost much the same whatever the size of the room.
- Moving the sink or gas adds about $3,000–8,000, and stone instead of laminate about $2,000–6,000 (CheckMyBuilder, July 2026). On a small job either one can add a third to the price.
- $10,000 buys a facelift on sound cabinets, not new cabinetry. $5,000 buys painted doors or one well-chosen upgrade.
How much does a small kitchen renovation cost in NZ?
About $1,533–3,000 per square metre + GST for budget to mid-range work, on Superior Renovations' Auckland rates (2026). Multiply by the floor area of the kitchen itself, not the open-plan room it sits in. CheckMyBuilder's whole-job budget band is $15,000–25,000 (July 2026), and most small kitchens with new cabinetry land somewhere inside it.
Measure the kitchen zone only: the floor in front of the cabinets and the cabinets themselves. In an open-plan room, the dining and living floor is not part of the kitchen price. Our cost calculator does the same sum for your size and region, and shows its working.
| Kitchen floor area | Basic ($1,533–2,000/m²) | Mid-range ($2,000–3,000/m²) | At the $2,300/m² Auckland average |
|---|---|---|---|
| 5 m² (a small galley or single wall) | $7,700–10,000 | $10,000–15,000 | $11,500 |
| 7 m² (a compact L or galley) | $10,700–14,000 | $14,000–21,000 | $16,100 |
| 9 m² (a small U or L with a short peninsula) | $13,800–18,000 | $18,000–27,000 | $20,700 |
The per-m² rates are Superior Renovations' Auckland figures, which exclude GST. The $2,300 average is CheckMyBuilder's (July 2026), which does not state a GST basis. Outside Auckland, CheckMyBuilder's typical job is lower: $32,000 against $40,000 in Auckland.
Why does a small kitchen cost more per square metre?
Because a lot of the job does not shrink with the room. A plumber still disconnects and reconnects the sink and dishwasher, an electrician still certifies the new circuits, the benchtop still needs a template visit, and an oven costs the same in a 5 m² kitchen as in a 15 m² one. Those fixed costs are spread over fewer square metres.
This is why the per-m² maths can come out under CheckMyBuilder's $15,000 floor for a budget job. Treat the bottom of the table as the cost of a small kitchen in the same footprint with every service left in place.
- Trades come by the visit, not the metre. A licensed plumber and a registered electrician are needed for any change to the sanitary plumbing or fixed wiring, and each brings the paperwork for it.
- Appliances are a fixed line. In a small kitchen they take a far bigger share of the total than they do in a large one.
- Corners are expensive. A small L or U shape has proportionally more corner units, which cost more than straight runs.
Can you remodel a small kitchen for $5,000?
Not with new cabinetry, but you can change how it looks. Spray-painting the existing doors costs about $2,000–4,000 (Superior Renovations, 2026), which leaves room for new handles, a tap and under-cabinet lighting. The cheapest new kitchen we can cite, an IKEA KNOXHULT run, is listed from $388 to $925 before benchtop, plumbing and installation.
On $5,000, spend on what you see and touch: the door finish, the handles and the light. Leave the plumbing alone. See what a kitchen facelift costs for each option priced.
Is $10,000 enough for a small kitchen?
It is enough for a thorough facelift on sound cabinets: Superior Renovations totals doors or paint, a laminate benchtop, a splashback, a new tap and sink and lighting at about $5,600–12,200 (2026). It is not usually enough for new cabinetry, which starts in the $15,000–25,000 band (CheckMyBuilder, July 2026), unless the kitchen is very small and nothing moves.
Check under the sink before you decide. Swollen particleboard around the sink and dishwasher is the usual reason a $10,000 facelift turns into a replacement.
Worked example: a 7 m² galley kitchen
A 7 m² galley kitchen at a basic specification comes to about $10,700–14,000 + GST on Superior's Auckland rates. Moving the sink to the other wall adds about $3,000–8,000, and stone instead of laminate another $2,000–6,000 (CheckMyBuilder, July 2026). With both, the same kitchen is about $15,700–28,000, which is a mid-range price.
In a galley the two runs face each other, so moving the sink across usually means new drainage under the floor. That is the line to cut first. More on this layout in galley kitchens.
| Choice | Adds | Running total, + GST |
|---|---|---|
| Basic spec, sink and cooktop stay put, laminate benchtop | $10,700–14,000 | |
| Move the sink or gas to another wall | $3,000–8,000 | $13,700–22,000 |
| Engineered stone instead of laminate | $2,000–6,000 | $15,700–28,000 |
The add-on figures come from CheckMyBuilder, which does not state a GST basis. Treat the totals as a planning range, not a quote.
How do you make a small kitchen renovation go further?
Keep the services where they are, spend on the benchtop and the doors, and use the height of the room. Tall cabinets to the ceiling add storage without adding floor, and a laminate benchtop at $383–613 per m² + GST against $613–1,533 for engineered stone (Superior Renovations, 2026) saves more on a small job than anything else you can choose.
If the house was built before 2000, get anything you are going to cut or remove tested for asbestos before work starts, particularly old vinyl flooring. The trade rules are in who has to be licensed, and the wider money-saving list is in renovating a kitchen on a budget.
- Pull-out drawers instead of doors in the base units. You use the back of the cupboard, which matters most when there are only a few of them.
- Light-coloured doors and a pale benchtop. They make a narrow room feel wider than a dark finish does.
- Lighting under the wall cabinets. It changes how a small kitchen works at night for the cost of an electrician's visit you are probably paying for anyway.
- Leave the window where it is. Moving a window means new framing and cladding outside, and often a consent.
